Crop wild relatives are the wild ‘cousins’ of our cultivated crops. In the same way that the wolf is related to the dog, CWR are related to our food plants.

Collecting in Guatemala

Collection and conservation of wild relatives of crops in Guatemala

The Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología Agrícolas (ICTA), with administrative support from Fundación para la Innovación Agropecuaria y Forestal (FUNDIT), coordinates collecting efforts in Guatemala.

Collectors from ICTA will target crop wild relatives in the gene pools of six crops: sweet potato, rice, common bean, potatoes, barley and eggplant. Collecting will take place during the project period 2016 – 2017.
